Born from passion for innovation

Already in the 1950’s, polythene bags and films were produced on the site. Unfortunately, this business went bankrupt in 1982.

Immediately, Gaston Vanderlinden seized the opportunity and restarted the business under a new name : “Jemaco”. Continuous product innovation with a focus on environmental benefits and ease of use as well as flexibility and high product quality made the company’s fame. Always on the lookout for new opportunities, the company was an early adopter of compostable plastics.

The production of compostable bags and films was launched in 2004. In close co-operation with different international commercial players, a strong position in a growing market was built. In 2008, the company decided to fully focus all efforts on this market, with the objective to eventually discontinue all business in traditional plastics. Only four years later, in 2012, this became reality. Since, the company exclusively focuses on compostable products, made from renewable, natural resources. Consequently, Jemaco changed its name to the significant “The Compost Bag Company”.

Today, 35 people work at The Compost Bag Company site in Herent and our products are being used in over 25 countries on 3 continents. In 2017, the company celebrated its 35th anniversary.
